SAS Back to School Plan

NOTES:  The following will apply at SAS to both Stage 2 and 3 of BC’s Education Restart Plan, and will be reviewed with students in more detail on either September 10 or 11th.

  • Student schedules for the 2020-21 school year have not changed.
  • Students and staff are required to physically distance and to wear a mask when entering the building, in the hallway, in common spaces (i.e. cafeteria, library, counselling & career centre) and while on buses.
    • The District will supply masks to staff and students, and/or students may bring their own.
  • Students attend 50% of the time at school, with assigned learning activities required while a student is at home.  The 50% attendance in school was necessary:
    • to ensure physically distance requirements could be maintained in common areas and classrooms,
    • to keep students in the courses they originally selected,
    • due to the variety of student schedules and elective options in grades 11 and 12, combined with the size of our student body (~600), we were unable to rebuild our timetable to successfully place students into Learning Groups of 120 for the entire day.
  • Students are split into two groups, based on their last names.
    • Last names A to K    Mondays, Thursdays & see Term 1 Timetable for Wednesday Schedule
    • Last names L to Z     Tuesdays, Fridays & see Term 1 Timetable for Wednesday Schedule
    • Decisions for Term 2 Last Name combinations, and Semester 2 (Terms 3 and 4) plans will be made based on the state of the Pandemic.
  • Students can attend 100% of the time if:
    • they are learners with diverse abilities (i.e. LR, IAP, CCP),
    • they are referred to School Based Team requiring additional support,
    • they require school resources during a study block.
    • Please contact the school to work out these details.
    • We will also make every effort to identify additional students (and possibly courses) that will be permitted to attend full time, as long as we can ensure physical distancing in these learning spaces.
  • Two classes take place each term:
    • Term 1 = A and C
    • Term 2 = B and D
  • We are using a non-rotating timetable each term, but we will switch the classes halfway.
    • Term 1
      • Sept 10 to Oct 9       A in the morning.  C in the afternoon
      • Oct 13 to Nov 13     C in the morning.  A in the afternoon
    • This will also apply to blocks B and D for Term 2 (Nov 16 to Jan 28).
  • Bell Schedule:
    • Morning classes start at 9:15am.
    • Afternoon classes start at 1:05pm.
    • School ends at 3:36pm.
  • The schedules for outside the timetable courses is set by the teacher, and communicated to students within the first couple of weeks of school.
  • Learning Groups are established for morning classes only, based on the location (or zones) of these classes in our building.
    • Each of these Learning Group is less than 120.
    • Learning Groups will be together during their staggered morning breaks and their staggered lunches.
  • Physically Distanced classes take place in the afternoon.
  • There are separate morning entrances and afternoon exits for each zone of our building.
  • Students are NOT assigned lockers this year.
